I’m starting to see more frequent reports about water shortages. They say that our next resource wars are more likely to be about water than oil or anything else. With the ongoing drought here and in so many other places, it’s not hard to believe.
We’ve been on watering restrictions here for years. I think they’ve been in place nearly as long as I’ve lived here. Odd-numbered street addresses are to water on only Wednesdays and Saturdays; even-numbered addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays. Monday, Tuesday and Friday are no-water days. I only water on Wednesdays; once a week is enough to keep the grass clinging to life until I can get it replaced.
On Sunday morning when I was walking, there were several lawns being watered appropriately, on the even-numbered side of the street. However, on Monday morning, the sprinklers at one of those same houses were spraying merrily away. And that’s certainly not the only instance I’ve seen; it’s just the most recent.
If we’re going to have any chance of averting water wars, the water police had better start enforcing the law NOW!!
