It’s the first day of autumn, although it still feels like summer here. We have another two to three weeks of summer-like weather, then our gorgeous fall weather will start. Our fall weather is like the perfect summer day most other places have, if they had them – highs in the low 80s, lows in the low 60s. Cooler, drier air. Wonderful. I can’t wait.
My three friends/coworkers and I celebrated the end of our Summer Challenge last week. We had enough money from our fines jar to take all four of us out to lunch at our campus restaurant, Cafe 101. It was a delicious meal and a great time was had by all.
Unfortunately, what it also means is that we ran up a lot of fines over the summer. Each of us had three goals that we wanted to meet. For T, it was all related to dietary restriction. For J, it was all related to exercise. For C and me, it was a combination of both of those things. J and C did much better than T and I. Most of the money in the jar was from T and me. But that’s okay; that was the idea behind the challenge.
Most of us have fallen back into our bad old patterns. J is the only one that hasn’t. Because the three of us want to get back into healthier patterns, and because J wants new challenges, we’ve decided to do a Winter Challenge. This one will last longer, I expect, with the understanding that the holidays won’t count in terms of eating challenges.
We’re going to start October 1. We’re still refining our record-keeping method. Google Calendar didn’t work as well as we would have liked. So C is looking for some other web-based tool that we can use.
The jelly jar in my filing cabinet, though, will retain its place as the depository for fines. 🙂
